Psycho-Emotional Health
Chinese medicine has long developed a thorough understanding of emotions and specific states of mental stability and imbalance through a long relationship with the mystery of the human mind.
Why Psycho-Emotional Health?
As Jeffrey Yuen puts it in this article, “The Chinese medical classics say that all diseases involve the spirit, so to heal them, you must go all the way down, or up, to the spirit level:”
In recent years, science has begun to recognize the powerful connections through which emotional, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect health outcomes.
Compared to biomedicine where mental and emotional processes are connected to the brain (reactions in the cerebral cortex, limbic system, and hypothalamus), in Chinese medicine, these processes are driven by the internal organs themselves.
Each organ system is intimately associated to its corresponding emotion. Any psycho-emotional imbalance will directly affect the physiology of its organ counterpart and vice-versa.
Negative Emotions
As a result, when these emotions become excessive, suppressed and chronic, they can insidiously manifest as a state of latency in our bodies. Kept unchecked, this state can slowly become the breeding ground for more pernicious disorders.
The lens through which Chinese medical diagnosis can recognize and prevent such chronic stressors is invaluable. The healing modalities this wholistic approach is coined with, allows both physiological and emotional balance to be restored.
